ReplyDeleteI chose the poem “Antonio Mays Jr. y Lorenzo Anderson, y Summer Taylor,” by Elisa Chavez, after stumbling upon it in search of work pertaining to the Body, Mind, Espiritu, and Resilience. Elisa Chavez has a blog dedicated to writing and poetry that is able to connect with others on current events. In a section of her blog titled Miss Translation, Elisa Chavez had written this poem after the lives of Lorenzo Anderson, Summer Taylor, and Antonio Mays Jr. were lost during the protests earlier in the summer. I think Elisa Chavez does a wonderful job of bringing forth the conversation of how Summer Taylor, Lorenzo Anderson, and Antonio Mays Jr. are mourned disproportionately without pointing any blame at the individuals. She dedicates a line in her poem to state “Le verane no tiene culpa con su cara fina, y coraje soleado,” to let the reader know she means no ill harm to the deceased. Elisa Chavez brought forth the idea of what bodies are valued and deserve mourning and how prevalent it is in the United States. Chavez brings a different perspective on the simplest terms lives of human beings were lost but the response to these are radically different. This poem sparks questions and conversations of how we value people and mourn them in the United States as well as how humanizing those who have been deemed as less than through remembrance is a form of resilience.
